This work is part of one of my most productive and continued collections. I use the term “collection” for all my work because I see my process indeed that I collect new instances and inspiration for impetus, exploration and interpretation. I name this collection “portraits of a european” while I am still pondering how to describe and explain this name as my thoughts about that swirl around in our tempestuous times. Anyhow, this name refers both to the depicted and the depictor.

In my creative process, I let each begin with a lucky coincidence to see a photographic moment and capture it. Deeply inspired by the art of painting, for this work I then used the photography as my base by altering, removing, adding details to elaborate and accentuate the emotional aspect. Exploring and navigating through my feelings and associations to find out what I first comprehensively saw.

In this case, I had stood there looking at the multitude of leading lines, the labyrinthic urban landscape in incandescent light against the nocturnal sky. Taking in the scene’s stillness of a lonely lane in a northern English town close to midnight, I noticed the board signaling a weak road. And the portrayed halting, hesitating, looking for a way around the seeming obstacle.

Several months later, I began my further work on my original photography as base. Reflecting on the board about the weak road, I elaborated on me realising that from my viewpoint, there had been another way possible. Involute as it appeared. But there it was. From another viewpoint, there is another way. An alternative may appear. That may be soothing. That may be testing. But there always is. As the Latin script notes which you see near the halting figure’s feet amid the glowing glimmers of little lights. May these serve as symbol for the transformative potential promoting emotional and spiritual growth.
